Shrinkage and Vertical Movements in Multi-Story Wood-Frame Structures
In light-frame wood buildings of three or more stories, cumulative shrinkage can be significant and have an impact on the function and performance of finishes, openings, mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) systems, and structural connections. However, as more designers look to light-frame construction to improve the cost and sustainability of their mid-rise projects, many have learned that accommodating wood shrinkage is very straightforward. Beginning with an overview of how moisture interacts with wood and why this results in shrinkage, this presentation will focus on providing practical information designers can use on projects—including procedures for estimating wood shrinkage, best practices for material protection and handling to avoid shrinkage, and detailing options that minimize the effects of shrinkage on building performance.
